Today with people living and working longer, there are five different generations represented in the workplace: Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y (Millennials), and Generation Z (Digital Natives).
Each generation has unique attitudes, values, traits and behaviors shaped by shared life experiences. Environmental influences, politics of the day, parental beliefs, historical events all impact and help define how each generation behaves as they mature. This also means that each generation comes to the workplace displaying these differences and skill sets, such as creativity, team participation, meeting attendance, management/leadership styles, and communication preferences. These differences can often result in misinterpretations, frustrations, commonly referred to as Generation Gaps.
We are faced with an additional challenge: with the Traditionalists and Baby Boomers at or near retirement, the U.S. is facing one of the largest demographic shifts in history. Over 40% (78 million) of the workforce are Baby Boomers. What impact will this have on the future of the workplace? Is Generation X (at only 48 million) properly prepared/trained to assume management/leadership roles? In 2015, Generation Y (Millennials) will outnumber Baby Boomers in the workforce. How is this changing the workplace? What skill sets will be required?
We will explore each of the generations and investigate:
- What defines each generation
- The characteristics, attitudes, and strengths of each generation
- The impact of the changing workforce
Understanding and appreciating each of the generations with their differences and flashpoints is key to maintaining effective relationships. With this knowledge, we can better communicate and collaborate with customers, peers, and co-workers.
