The Hodges University Veterans Club, comprised of students who are veterans, will host their fifth annual Veterans Day celebration on Friday, November 9, beginning at 11:00 am at the newly constructed Pavilion on the Hodges Naples campus, 2655 Northbrooke Drive. The event will be simulcast for Hodges students at the Ft. Myers campus.
The ceremony will pay tribute to all veterans and acknowledge the many sacrifices and accomplishments put forth which have enabled our country to remain strong and vigilant. The ceremony will feature a presentation of colors from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard, followed by a speech by guest speaker, Bonita Springs City Councilman Steven Slachta (District 3), U.S. Air Force (Ret.).
Slachta is a graduate of Syracuse University where he received both a B.A. and M.S. while in the Air Force Reserve program. Shortly after graduation from college he worked with the New York State Office of Developmental Disabilities and eventually moved to the Governor’s office as the Deputy Director of Quality Assurance. He also served with the U.S. Air Force for 23 years. He has a passion to serve Veterans and disabled individuals in the city of Bonita Springs.
During the ceremony, a flag, originally flown above the U.S. Capitol, will be presented to Bonita Springs resident Russell Winsett. Mr. Winsett served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Pearl Harbor during the attacks on December 7, 1941. During World War II, he saw combat nine times in the Pacific theater, being sent to the Guam, the Philippines and Japan, part of what was to be a 20-year career in the service.
The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony. For more information, phone 938-7826.
