International College Accounting Student Receives First-Time $1,500 CPA Scholarship Award
The Community Foundation of Collier County has awarded the first CPA Scholarship Fund award to International College Accounting major Jesus Solarte.
The CPA Scholarship Fund was set up through donations and is designed to provide financial assistance to a deserving student who has shown academic achievement and an excellent chance for success in the certified public accounting field.
Accounting Program Chair Thomas Nohl and Accounting Professor Melinda Chancy nominated Solarte for the scholarship.
“Jesus is an outstanding student candidate for the scholarship. I was happy to recommend him because he is a very dedicated and hardworking professional. Jesus will add value to the field of accounting,” Chancy said. “There are many outstanding accounting students, so the fact that Jesus excelled and was selected for the first scholarship is very exciting for him and International College.”
Solarte, 37, who works in the Loan Operations Department for First National Bank of Florida in Naples, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting and plans to become certified as a CPA. He has been named to the Dean’s List three times since enrolling at International College during the winter 2003 term.
Prior to pursuing his education, Solarte was an officer in the Army. He was stationed in Fort Lewis, located in Washington State. Though he receives tuition assistance through the Federal GI Bill, it does not cover all of his educational expenses.
“It was a great honor for me to receive the CPA Scholarship. I was not expecting this honor. I am grateful to Dr. Chancy for nominating me and to the Community Foundation of Collier County for providing the scholarship,” Solarte, of Naples, said. “The scholarship will come in very handy, particularly since I have a family to support.”
Solarte has been married to his wife, Catalina, for 10 years. The couple resides in Naples and has a 7-year-old son.
International College offers associate and bachelor’s degree in accounting. It also offers curriculum leading to certification from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. For more information, contact the Naples admission’s office at 512-1122.
