Local news anchors to speak at ESL graduation ceremony

Hodges University announced today the names of the guest speakers for its upcoming English as a Second Language (ESL) graduation ceremonies. At the Ft. Myers campus, FOX 4 anchor Patrick Nolan will be the featured speaker on Wednesday, December 14 at 10:00 am. The event will take place in the Kleist Community Room at the Ft. Myers campus, located at 4501 Colonial Blvd. and Winkler.

Nolan, a native Floridian, has been with FOX 4 since 2003. After graduating from University of Florida, he went to Australia for a year of graduate school thanks to a Rotary International scholarship. He has worked at TV stations in Montgomery, Panama City, West Palm Beach and Houston. Among his many assignments, he has reported from Cuba, Germany, Mexico and Italy. Besides anchoring the news at FOX 4 he also reports on the latest research and treatments affecting health in his “4 In Your Corner Medical Reports.”

At the Hodges Naples campus, WINK-TV news anchor Lois Thome will be the featured speaker at the ESL graduation ceremony on Thursday, December 15 at 10:00 am. The event will take place in the Lecture Hall in the Science and Technology building, 2655 Northbrooke Drive.

Ms. Thome joined WINK-TV in 1992 and since then has garnered many awards and recognition including: The Best News Anchor in Southwest Florida, the Phi Delta Kappa Lay Person of the Year, the Quill Pen Award from the Florida Association of School Administrators, was named a Woman in History from the American Business Women's Association, the Library Advocate of the Year by the Southwest Florida Library Network and was voted one of the top Women of the Year by Gulfshore Life Magazine.

According to Leisha Klentzeris, Director of the ESL program at Hodges, the ESL graduation is an emotional event. “Our ESL students work very hard and are dedicated to learning the English language, helping them achieve a variety of personal goals,” said Klentzeris. “We are honored to have two distinguished speakers offer words of encouragement to the students.”

Students currently enrolled in the program hail from over 20 different countries, and often use the ESL program to matriculate into other classes at Hodges. For this term, nearly 500 students are enrolled in the intensive program.
